What is a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has completed extra training to specialise in mental health. They are qualified to diagnose and treat mental health issues, emotional problems, and provide therapies such as counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy and medications. Psychiatrists have a deep understanding of physical and mental health—and how they affect each other. They assess your mental and physical symptoms and work with you to develop a treatment plan. Psychiatrists provide assistance to those suffering from mental health issues, including schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, anxiety and OCD.

What’s the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

The primary difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist is that a psychiatrist can prescribe and monitor medication, while a psychologist delivers psychological therapies and does not prescribe medication. Hence, some people benefit from seeing both a psychiatrist and a psychologist.

At Mind Health Care we offer psychiatry for clients aged 18 to 60 years old requiring an ADHD assessment and clients who are currently working with a psychologist at Mind Health Care who require a Psychiatric Review.
